It's difficult to know the best skincare route to take for every issue that may come up—from fine lines and wrinkles to breakouts and acne scars. As blemishes come and go, often they'll leave red marks and scarring in their place, and each one can differ in severity.

But what's the best option? I've read a lot about microdermabrasion to treat acne scars, so I reached out to a few of skincare's biggest power players to find out more. Below, they discuss the best treatments for those annoying acne scars.

First, I talked to Chin, who is known for her unbelievable attention to detail, as she clears every last pore in her sought-after facials. Yes, I recommend it for light to slight acne scars, as microdermabrasion removes and renews the surface level of the skin, Chin says. However,  it's not recommended for deep scars. Light or tiny bumps on the surface level can be more easily removed by treating the top layer of the skin. Because it renews the surface layer, your skin will appear more smooth and more even in tone. Surface marks will fade, and dead skin will be removed. Use a scrub before the treatment and three to four days post-treatment. Lasers will be needed for deeper scars.

Since she agreed it wasn't the best possible choice for acne scarring, I did a bit of research to find a better option before deciding whether or not toopt for lasers.

Is Microdermabrasion The Real Acne Scar Solution?

Dermalinfusion simultaneously exfoliates, extracts, and infuses condition-specific serums into your skin for maximum penetration and absorption, Tolani says. It's similar to microdermabrasion, as it is designed to abrade the top layer of skin to slough off superficial skin cells (which is meant to help prevent the pore congestion that leads to breakouts and stimulate collagen production). The difference is that at the exact and optimal time, professional-grade serums (personalized to your specific skin concerns) are infused into the skin. It's this precision timing of sloughing and serum infusion that ensures skin is at its peak moment to receive treatment from the targeted serums, Tolani says. Simply applying products onto your skin doesn't allow for maximum penetration, but Dermalinfusion's technology promises to drive serums deep into freshly revealed layers of skin where they will have the most impact. The treatment is meant to help clean and decongest the skin, preventing further clogging that can potentially end up as a scar. It may also temporarily help minimize the appearance of existing scars.

If you're not quite ready for lasers (though the results can be quite extraordinary, ask Chin)—opt for microdermabrasion or Dermalinfusion for light scars. It's completely painless (kind of like the feeling of a cat's tongue across your skin). You may experience some mild pinkness since the blood is circulating, Tolani says. But this is normal and dissipates in about 30 minutes. There's absolutely no downtime: You are free to go about your day immediately following the treatment. As always, check with a doctor or dermatologist before making any decisions. They'll be able to tell you what's best for your personalized treatment.Acne is a tough skin condition to overcome; it’s hard to treat, uncomfortable and can cause a lot of self-consciousness. So when you finally beat it, it’s really disheartening to discover that your skin is now covered with very obvious scars. After all the effort you’ve put into beating acne, you definitely want to find a solution to these scars, one that will work and give you long-term results. So, can Microdermabrasion help to reduce your acne scars? It certainly can! Microdermabrasion is a fantastic treatment for acne scarring. Read on to learn more about how it can help acne scars.

Microdermabrasion

When you have the occasional spot or two, the skin can heal quite well and they will often disappear without a trace. However, if you have acne, the breakouts are far more severe and can leave very noticeable marks. Acne is characterised by lots of infected pores very close together, combined with a high level of irritation and strong immune response. This leads to large swollen cysts deep within the skin. Acne cysts damage the top layer of the skin, the epidermis, leading to discoloured marks. But they also damage the deeper layer of the skin, the dermis, which contains fibrous tissues like collagen, hyaluronic acid and elastin. These fibrous tissues give the skin its structure; they are what keep the skin smooth and firm. When the skin becomes damaged, more of these tissues are produced to heal the broken skin, but unfortunately for us, our skin doesn’t care what it looks like. As soon as the open spots and swellings have gone away, the healing process stops, leaving behind healthy, but visibly unevenly textured skin.

Our skin might not care about how it looks, but we certainly do! Luckily microdermabrasion is a great option for helping to improve the appearance of acne scarring. During a Microdermabrasion facial, the therapist uses a handset to pass a fine jet of abrasive crystals over your skin; these crystals gently abrade away dead skin. This removes surface imperfections, and stimulates cell renewal, which has a double action against scarring; it removes the discoloured marks, and helps your skin to replace those old cells with fresh new skin cells. This fades the visible scars, but what about the texture scars – those bumps and dips that are impossible to cover with makeup and can lead to serious feelings of insecurity? There’s good news – Microdermabrasion also works to reduce them! During the facial, the abrasive crystals and dead skin are gently sucked away from the skin using a vacuum, and this vacuum action helps to stimulate collagen production in the dermis, plumping the skin and effectively ‘filling in’ the uneven texture to leave you with even, smooth skin.

As with most skin problems, prevention is better than cure. There are countless skincare products and treatments out there that claim to help fight acne and reduce scarring, but did you know that Microdermabrasion is also a fantastic treatment against acne itself? Your therapist will avoid any open spots and will work on decongesting your skin to stop more cysts from forming. Just like with treatment for acne scarring, Microdermabrasion will stimulate collagen production to help your skin to heal more effectively. It will also help to calm the redness around your spots, and will stimulate the circulation in your skin to help to reduce swellings, therefore reducing the appearance of spots, and the amount of permanent damage they can do. Take a look at these before and afters to see how effective Microdermabrasion is against acne and acne scarring, and book a consultation with one of our expert therapists today!
