Have you too been in a situation where you got all decked up for an occasion, with your hair in place, makeup on point and you spot a pimple that has popped up, uninvited and annoying? We know this incident is #relatable, because all of us have been there at some point or the other. Pimples are like these annoying friends that show up and simply refuse to leave. Pimples usually occur when oil glands in our skin become overactive and cause inflammation in the pores. If you too are a victim of pimples on a regular basis, read on to know more about their types, causes and some pimple-free skin tips.
Pimples are usually a result of hormonal changes and excessive oil production in our skin’s oil glands. However, those are not the only reasons that cause these annoying pimples to pop up on your face. Here are some other factors that can be probable causes:
When dead cells and sebum clog the skin’s pores, blackheads are formed. Since the top of the pore stays open, when the accumulated dirt is exposed to air, it forms a blackish coloured plug, thus causing ‘black’heads.
Pretty Simple Home Remedies For Acne That Work!
Whiteheads are also formed in the same way as blackheads, but the difference in colour is that the top of the pore stays closed, thus the dirt inside does not come in contact with air that creates a blackish colour.
Often pinkish or reddish in colour, papules are a result of the walls around your pores breaking down due to inflammation. They are harder in nature and cause irritation on the skin.
Pustules are formed in the same way papules are, the only difference being that they are filled with pus, which makes them even worse.

When clogged and swollen pores endure irritation and grow bigger, nodules are the result. Unlike pustules and papules, nodules are deeper underneath the skin and hence difficult to treat.
Cysts develop when the pores are clogged with bacteria, sebum and dead skin cells; and they get embedded deeper in the skin, further below nodules. Cysts can be painful and cause scars.
There are several conventional treatments for attaining pimple-free skin, but if you want to opt for the gharelu nuskha route, then there are several home remedies you can try. These natural alternatives may sometimes heal pimples faster than medical treatments, so here we present some pimple-free skin tips that are effective:
Easy Home Remedies For Acne
Tea tree oil is renowned for the many benefits it bestows on our skin and our hair. For pimple-free skin too, tea tree oil is a saviour! Tea tree oil fights inflammation and bacteria; and especially, those particular types of bacteria that cause pimples.
Firstly, it is important to understand that tea tree oil must never be used on its own. It should always be used with a carrier oil as not doing so may cause irritation and redness on the skin.
Green tea has various health benefits, and you’ll be surprised to know that it is also one of the lesser-known pimple-free skin tips. The flavonoids present in green tea fight bacteria that are the cause of pimples. Besides, the high levels of antioxidants present in green tea also fight inflammation and reduce sebum production, which can ultimately inhibit the formation of pimples.
Effective Home Remedies To Treat Hormonal Acne
Neem leaves help regulate the oil in skin’s pores, thus preventing the excessive oil production that leads to pimples. Anti-fungal properties of neem also lighten scars and pigmentation that are caused by pimples.
Potatoes contain starches that soothe inflammation and absorb excessive oil produced by the skin glands. Moreover, they also contain cytokines that have anti-inflammatory properties, which can help you achieve pimple-free skin.
For centuries, turmeric has been considered a super spice known for its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. Because of those properties, using it is one of the many effective pimple-free skin tips. Curcumin, which is a primary component of turmeric, can reduce inflammation on the skin.

The pungent garlic has antibacterial, antifungal, and antiseptic properties from allicin. Allicin is known to kill bacteria that cause pimples, thus making garlic an excellent home remedy for pimple-free skin. Besides, garlic also helps to reduce swelling and inflammation caused by pimples.
Leaving the garlic paste for too long can cause burns on the skin, so do not let it stay on your face for more than five minutes.
Honey’s antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties kill pimple-causing bacteria and reduce the activity of inflammatory compounds. Lemon, due to its astringent qualities, can reduce oil production on the skin and reduce inflammation.

When it comes to preventing acne, natural remedies aren't always top-of-mind. Instead, many of us reach for antibiotics, prescription topicals, or harsh, over-the-counter measures. But sometimes the best thing to do when fighting acne isgo back to the basics—or go natural.
We spoke toS.W. Basics founder Adina Grigore, celebrityfacialist Joanna Vargas of Joanna Vargas Salon, and board-certified dermatologists Dendy Engelman and Keira Barr about natural ways to treat acne.
Acne Care, Treatment, And Home Remedies
While many of us drink coffee in the morning and soda throughout the day, this can wreak havoc on the skin. Looking at caffeine consumption is another thing to consider when it comes to acne, says Barr. Studies show that consuming a dose of caffeine (specifically 400 mg, in one study) up to six hours before bedtime can disrupt sleep.
And lack of sleep can lead to a cascading effect on the body. Disruption of sleep messes with your circadian rhythm and hormone balance between cortisol and melatonin, leading to increased cortisol levels, she adds. Increased cortisol leads to increased sebum, inflammation and dysbiosis which equals more breakouts.
As difficult as it can be, limiting stress is often key to preventing breakouts. Too much stress not only causes skin irritation, inflammation, accelerates fine lines and wrinkles, it also contributes to breakouts, says Barr.

So, how does one cope? Barr recommends movement, meditation, breathwork, art, journaling, time in nature and time spent doing things you enjoy with people you enjoy as a way to help minimize stress levels. Most importantly, she adds, offering yourself grace and self-compassion when your complexion is offering insight that your body is inflamed is vital.
Technically, baking soda and water soften blackheads and any clogged pores in the skin, Vargas says, adding that baking soda is best for congested skin as this type is the most prone to pore blockages. She recommends a DIY baking soda mask, which you can leave on for 10 minutes and follow up with a moisturizer.
Baking soda may also work to neutralize the pH level of your skin. This could be important because, if your pH is imbalanced, you may become prone to acne breakouts, dryness, and other skin irritations.

It's the best astringent in nature because it helps to balance the skin’s pH, making you both less oily and less dry, says Grigore of using ACV on your skin. But beware, because apple cider vinegar is very pungent, you should dilute the substance before using it. I recommend using a mixture of one part vinegar to four parts water. Apply to your face with cotton or a spritzer. No need to wash it off, she says.
ACV may also chemically exfoliate the skin, fight blackheads, and improve hyperpigmentation, but only when used correctly, Engelman cautions. Without dilution, the ingredient can cause burns and skin irritation, especially if there are any open wounds on your skin.
Our experts recommend Bragg Organic Raw Apple Cider Vinegar ($10) for at-home skincare remedies, to be used four times per week or less.
